Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 26 August 2014. LSP (Life Sciences Partners), a leading European investor in health care, today announced the acquisition of its portfolio company Sapiens Steering Brain Stimulation (Sapiens SBS), a developer of deep brain stimulation (DBS) technologies, by Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) for EUR 150 million in an all-cash transaction.
DBS Therapy is a treatment for movement symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including shaking, stiffness, and difficulty moving. Sapiens SBS is developing a DBS system that would allow the stimulation field to be shaped according to individual patient needs. Medtronic and Sapiens SBS will work to finalize product development and begin clinical research to integrate Sapiens SBS’ products and technologies into an expanded portfolio of DBS products within Medtronic’s Neuromodulation business.
